TRANSCRIPT OF WILLIAM PEACHEY’S WILL 1688 Below is a transcript of the parchment copy of William Peachey’s Will dated 1688. The original parchment copy is still held by the family.
Copy of the WILL of Mr. William PEACHEY of the parish of EAST DEAN, WEST SUSSEX who died 1688 IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, I William Peachey of the parrish of East Deane in the County of SUSSEX BLACKSMITH being aged but of sound and perfect rembrance Praised be the Lord therefore DOE make and ordaine this to be my last will and testament in manner and forme following that is to say FIRST and principally I commend my soule into the hands of Almighty God my maker and Creator and in Jesus Christ my only Saviour and Redeemer by whose death and passion I trust only to be saved AND I committ my Body to the Earth from whence it came to be decently buryed by the discretion of my Executrix hereafter named in East Deane Churchyard I T E M I give and bequeathe my Grandchild Mary Collyer the sume of Fiftie Pounds of lawful money of England to be paid into the handes of John CROWCHER of East Deane aforesaid Yeoman and Richard GLOVER of Charleton Yeoman whome I make overseers in Trust of this my last will and Testament within three months next after my decease And my said overseers to putt out the said Fiftie pounds to interest untill the said Mary COLLYER shall attaine her full age of Eighteen Yeares And then to be paid unto her with all the interest and profitt made of the said Fiftie Pounde BUT if my said Grandchild cannot well subsist without the interest of the said Fiftie pounds till shee shall attaine her age of Eighteene yeares Then my will and meaning is that my said Overseers shall allow and pay the interest of the said Fiftie pounds towards the mainteyning and bring upp of my said Grandchild Mary COLLYER A L S O E I give unto Mary COLLYER my said Grandchild Three paire of Sheetes half a dozen napkins and one little iron dripping pann to be paid and delivered unto her when shee shall attaine her age of Eighteene yeares, But if in case my said grandaughter Mary COLLIER shall happen to dye before shee shall attaine her said age of Eighteene yeares Then the Legacies to here by me before given shall remaine and be equally divided between my Executrix hereafter named I T Em I give and bequeathe unto my daughter Dorothy COLLICK of Singleton in the said County all my Free lands Smith Shopp lying in the said parrish of Singleton That is to say) One Smithe Shopp Two Filli deanes and One Broadham with Th'appurtennce during her natural life (except all manner of Trees and Coppice Woods) and from and imediatly after her decease to her sonne William COLLICK and his heires for ever A N D will and meaning is That my Grandsonn the said William COLLICK shall have the benefitt of all woods and Coppices to beginn immediately after my decease and to be cutt down and sold by my said overseers And the moneys thereof made to be putt out for the use of my said Grandson William COLLICK and to be paid unto him when hee shall attaine his full age of One and Twenty Yeares But if in case my said overseers will not take the trouble to cutt downe the said Timber and rees and Coppices woods Then to remaine and be for the only use and behoofe of my said Grandsonn William COLLICK and to and for noe other use intent and purpose whatsoever I T E M I give and bequeathe more unto my said Daughter Dorothy COLLICK my Bed in the outer Chamber in my dwelling house and all that belongs to it I T E M I give unto m,y Five Grandchildren Dorothy COLLICK, Margarett COLLICK, Ellenor COLLICK, Damaris COLLICK, and John COLLICK fifteene pounds a peece to be paid unto them when they shall attaine their severall ages of Eighteen yeares And if any or either of them shall happen to dye before they shall attaine their said severall ages of Eighteen yeares Then the portion or legacies of him her or they soe dying shall remayne and be toe the survivours or survivour of him her or them equally to be divided between them I T E M I give and bequeathe unto my daughter Damaris DANCE my dwelling house shopp and Garden lying in Eastdeane aforesaid with Th'appurtennce during her naturall life And from and after her decease Then I give the said house Garden Shopp and premisses unto my Grandsonn Henry DANCE sonne of the said Damaris DANCE and his heirs for ever And also I give and bequeathe unto my said Daughter Damaris DANCE the sume of Fiftie pounds of law full money of England And the Bed and all belonging to him in my Inner Chamber in my said Dwelling house and the Table and the Cubbord in my Hall I T E M I give unto my Grandchild William DANCE the sume of Twenty pounds And unto my said Grandsonn Henry DANCE the sume of Twenty pounds And unto my Grandsonn Thomas DANCE the sume of Fifteen pounds and unto my Grandaughter Damaris DANCE the sume of Fifteen pounds to be paid unto them when they shall attaine their severall ages of Eighteene Yeares But if in case any or either of them shall happen to dye before they shall attaine their severall ages of Eighteen yeares Then the Legacy or Legacies of him her or them soe dyeing shall remaine and be to the survivours or survivour of him her or the, equally to be divided between them I T E M I give unto my Three Sonne in Law James DANCE, John COLLICK and John COLLYER five shillings a peece to be paid unto them within one month next after my decease ALL THE REST of my Goods Cattell and Chattelle whatsoever not before given or bequeathe my Debts Legacies and Funeral expenses discharged I give fully wholly and totally unto my said Daughter Dorothy COLLICK and my said Daughter Damaris DANCE W H O M E I make full and whole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament to be equally divided betweene them A N D I doe hereby intreate & desire and alsoe make the abovesaid John CROWCHER and Richard GLOVER to be Overseers in Trust of this my Will And I give to each of them for their Care and paines Ten Shilling a peece IN WITNESS whereof I the said William Peachey renouncing all former wills by me made have hereunto sett my hand and seale Dated the
